If you’ve ever looked at pizza stones, then you’d know that they come all kinds of different shapes and sizes. Let’s not even get started on what they’re made of, because there is plenty of variety there too! Some pizza stones are round, others are squares, some are large, and others are fairly petite. Simply put, there are many different pizza stones on the market. You’re probably wondering if the shape and size of your pizza stone has any affect on your pizza, we’ll let you know in the rest of this article!

Pizza Comes in Many Forms!

One thing we should get out of the way before discussing pizza stones is what a pizza looks like. Honestly, pizza comes in many different shapes, sizes, forms, and varieties! The most common and traditionally accepted pizza shape is a round, flat pie with a diameter ranging from 8-18”.

Just because a round, flat pie is most popular doesn’t mean it is the only way a pizza can look! Pizzas are often round, but you can find them in squares, triangles, and just about any shape you can think of!

Pizza is less about what it looks like and more about what it is made of. If they were made the same way and with identical ingredients, you probably won’t notice any difference between a square pizza and a traditional round pizza.

Now that we understand pizza is a very broad term, let’s get into the different shapes of pizza stones and see if they matter!

Pizza Stone Shapes

While you can find pizza stones in a wide variety of shapes, the two most popular are round and square pizza stones. It is no surprise then that these two are also the most effective shapes for cooking pizza on. While they both work quite similarly, their different shape does result in slightly different products. Here’s the differences between square and round stones:

  • Round Stone – The round pizza stone is the classic shape for a pizza stone, and for good reason! It is shaped to mimic the bottom of your pizza, which allows just about every inch of the stone to directly heat your crust! While this does make it harder to place your pizza on the stone, it also provides better targeted heat than a rectangular stone. This makes it harder to burn your pizza with a round stone than with a rectangular one. The main drawback of round stones is their lack of flexibility. You can cook some other foods on a round pizza stone, but you’re limited because of the stone’s shape.
  • Square (Rectangular) Stone – The one thing that a rectangular pizza stone is noticeably better at is getting and staying hot. Generally speaking, a rectangular pizza stone will have more surface area than a round stone, which gives greater room for the rectangular stone to absorb and retain heat. This will result in slightly crispier crust than a rounded pizza stone of the same size. It will also cook a little faster. Rectangular stones are mainly useful because they’re great for cooking a wider variety of food besides pizza. A rectangular shape is far more accommodating than that of a rounded stone.

Do Dimensions Matter?

So now we understand that the shape of a pizza stone does matter, even if the effect is minimal. The next question is whether or not the dimensions of a pizza stone matter.

When considering a pizza stone, there are actually 3 dimensions that you need to be aware of. The first two include the length and width, which determine how much surface area the stone will have. The other dimension is the stone’s thickness, which directly impacts the stone’s weight and heating time.

When it comes to pizza stones, the dimension of the stone absolutely does matter! Here’s how each dimension affects a pizza stone’s performance:

  • Length/Width – The length and width of your pizza stone are basically the same dimension because you always have the ability to rotate your stone, swapping the stone’s length and width. The longer your stone is in length and width, the larger the surface area of the stone will be.Surface area is important because you’re cooking a flat pizza, which is almost entirely surface. Having a larger surface area will result in a faster cooking time and better heat retention. At the same time, it will take longer to heat up and cool. Additionally, if you purchase a stone too big for your oven, there won’t be enough room for air to circulate around the stone.
  • Thickness – The thickness of your pizza stone is also very important. Having a thicker pizza stone will result in greater heat retention, but it will also take much longer to heat. On the other side of the coin, if you have a pizza stone that is too thin, it is much easier to crack and break than thicker stones.As long as you use a pizza stone with a thickness of at least ⅝”, you shouldn’t encounter any issues with cracking from being too thin. Most pizza stones don’t come much thicker than 1”, but you won’t really notice any difference between a ⅝” stone and a 1” stone. If you notice anything, the thinner stone will heat faster but cook a little slower, while the thicker stone takes longer to hear but cooks quicker. In the end, the differences mostly cancel eachother out. Just ensure your stone is at least ⅝” thick!

When it comes to comparing rectangular and round pizza stones, there are some differences but they’re fairly negligible. Round pizza stones are great for making pizza, but rectangular stones are far more flexible in their usability.

Dimensions of a pizza stone are far more impactful. Larger stones heat slower than smaller ones, but they also hold that heat better and cook pizza faster. Thickness of your stone doesn’t really matter so long as your pizza stone is at last ⅝” thick, otherwise it will be prone to cracking!
